In the Caribbean, former Diplomatic Security Service and CIA Operative Frank Xavier enjoys fishing and drinking his way through a self-imposed retirement. A call from his former commander throws him in the middle of a twisted global plot — one where nothing is quite as it seems.

Kate Martens is a brilliant but stubborn DEA agent, dead set on bringing down a brutal Mexican drug cartel. When her investigation suddenly collides with Frank’s, they team up to stop the attack from killing thousands of Americans — and the war that will surely follow.

Their pursuit drags them from the violent slums of Mexico to the Russian underground. When Kate’s life is put at risk, Frank comes up with a desperate plan. Will he be able to save her life, stop another war in the middle east, and bring the true masterminds to justice?

At every turn, a secretive group works against them – one that wants nothing more than to see the attack succeed, and America turn its military might towards an all too familiar foe.

The Fix Is In
Chapter 37:

Frank Xavier’s ears were ringing, sending a signal of pain through his nerves to his brain. But oddly, it came with no sound. He opened his eyes to see a world on its side. Smoke rose to the right, dust settled to the left. He blinked once, twice. The field of view in his right eye turned pink as he felt the blood trickle from his temple down into his eye. He tried to orient himself, realizing that he lay on his side, but the aches in his hands and legs fought back. Frank flexed each limb and was surprised when they all responded, intermixed with sharp stings as his lacerated skin stretched with each movement. Getting to his feet, he looked over the scene.

He saw his teammates stumble around silently. At least they had kept their cover position instead of running towards the bomber. He closed his eyes and exhaled, as the image of the explosion ran through his mind. The lives that it took, victims of a hatred that enveloped an entire region, all that remained were ghosts to occupy his subconscious. He leaned over, coughing to clear his lungs of the dust, and opened his eyes. He found himself looking down at his arms and legs. The ceramic plated tactical vest had done its job and protected his core, but his exposed limbs were covered with cuts. He saw the uniform that he had so proudly worn for the last 14 years hanging in tatters across his body. A uniform covered in more blood than could have possibly come from him alone.

For the first time in his life, it was a uniform he could not wait to take off.
